Background

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on balance, posture, strength and flexibility. It's suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Joseph Pilates was the original founder of this exercise modality which is based on 6 principles:

  • Centering - The term used to describe your body's centre or 'powerhouse'. Often described as your 'core' or 'trunk stability'.

  • Concentration – During Pilates you should concentrate on your body to move in smooth and controlled movements. This improved body awareness.

  • Control – Every exercise in Pilates must be done with control.  Fundamentally its about you being in control of your body against gravity.

  • Flow - Exercises flow and transition from one into another to help build strength, control and stamina.

  • Precision - aiming for directed and precise movement with controlled repetition to allow transference into everyday life and activity.

  • Breathing - This focusses on coordinating breathing with movement and allows effective and optimal use and control of your muscles and movement.
